System and Product Safety Concepts course focuses on designing products and systems such that safety is optimized. 

Topics covered include:

  • Safety management, and the system and product safety concept.
  • System and product safety definitions.
  • System and product safety management requirements.
  • Hazard identification techniques and analyses, including System Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Subsystem Hazard Analysis, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Operating Hazard Analysis, and others.
  • The use of historical data to identify potential hazards.
  • Risk quantification approaches.
  • Design and process approaches for hazard elimination or mitigation, including appropriate safety margins, safety and warning devices, redundancy, fail-safe designs, interlocks, guards, and other hazard control techniques.
  • The elimination of hazards induced by single-point product failures or operator errors.
  • Managing system and product safety risk, including hazard tracking and acceptance approaches for residual hazards.
