System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) is an emerging field, related, but distinct from traditional Systems Engineering. SoSE is concerned with design, operation, maintenance, evaluation, and transformation of multiple integrated complex systems.
This course is focused on providing students with an appreciation of engineering necessary to design, deploy, operate, and transform systems of systems. Particular emphasis is placed on effectively dealing with systems of systems that are diverse in technology, context, operation, geography, and conceptual frame.
Students engage in understanding the technical/technology, organizational/managerial, human/social, and policy/political aspects of dealing with systems of system problem domains. The use of advanced methods and approaches (methodology) unique to the particular system of systems problem-in-focus are explored.
The training provides a clear explanation for four critical questions:
(1) What is a system of systems and the applicable problem domain for SoSE?
(2) How is SoSE different and related to traditional Systems Engineering?
(3) How can SoSE be deployed to address complex system problems?, and
(4) How can SoSE efforts be designed and evaluated to increase effectiveness?
