Event Brief

Software reliability engineering (SRE) has developed scientific principles, metrics, statistical models and techniques for aiding organizations engineer a desired degree of reliability and/or availability into a software product.  Latent faults in a product that do not surface as field failures do not impact product reliability.  SRE is a risk-based software development methodology that maximizes available personnel to focus on the reduction of faults more likely to be encountered by a customer as a field failure and, thereby, impacting product reliability and availability.

With SRE, organizations choose a failure intensity objective (FIO) commensurate with the impact of a failure on the user, which can differ significantly between products.  Teams choose the practices of their software development process and fault tolerance strategies to achieve their FIO based upon historical trends.  The arrival rate of failures during testing and in use are input into statistical models that are used to predict product reliability, availability, and release readiness based upon achieving desired FIO. Using a product’s operational profile, SRE is used to guide validation and verification efforts towards those parts of the product that have the most impact on reliability and availability.

Course Objective
  • Determine the reliability / availability your customers need for your product and engineer your process to deliver it
  • Develop operational profiles to de-scribe how customers will use your product
  • Determine how many test cases you need to and can develop
  • Use operational profiles to:
    • Increase development efficiency
    • Allocate test cases,  time efficiently
    • Make test represent field use
  • Process failure data to:
    • Track reliability growth and guide release of systems you develop
    • Certify systems
