Reliability engineering is a field that predicts product and process reliability, identifies areas in which reliability can be improved, predicts reliability growth, provides analyses that focus product and process improvement efforts, and supports produce and process development efforts.
The aerospace and defense industries have used reliability engineering techniques for decades. Reliability engineering is also widely used in the automotive, biomedical, electronics, optics, computer, and other high technology industries to guide product improvement efforts, develop warranties, create preventive maintenance schedules, and identify areas in which design redundancy and interlocks are required to assure product performance and safety.
