This course combines a description of the fundamentals of lasers and optics with detailed descriptions of their implementation in Laser Systems and Laser Applications, especially in LADAR and LIDAR. By LADAR, we mean hard body detection, moving target indication, and identification through imaging and micro-doppler measurements. By LIDAR, we refer to atmospheric measurements, including wind, chemical and aerosol detection. Specific systems that have been built and tested will be described, with an emphasis on systems that have been implemented for military applications. In addition, some descriptive materials will be presented that show the application of Lasers to applications in remote detection that are similar to LADAR LIDAR, such as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for chemical detection.

On completion, the attentive participant should have a firm foundation to:

Identify feasible and practical systems and applications

Identify useful and sufficient components

Recognize the State of the Art

Develop tools such as nomenclature recognition to help search for further useful information

Have contact information for suppliers of various components and systems

This programme will advance the familiarity of the participant to recognize capabilities of current systems, and possibilities for future systems.
